2024 is the Yang Wood Dragon year in Chinese astrology (4th of February 2024 to 2nd of February 2025).
What is the Feng Shui of this Chinese year of the Dragon? Let’s review together the good and bad sectors and the lucky directions based on Feng Shui traditional formulas. Those sectors are determined by the annual Feng Shui afflictions, as well some Chinese oracles. I’m gonna walk you through it. I am also going to explain which areas of your house or business should not be disturbed in the Dragon year 2024 and which can be used or enhanced.
The Dragon is the fifth of the 12 animals cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Each sign is linked to specific years but also to specific locations and directions on the Chinese compass (called the Luo Pan or Lopan) we use in Feng Shui. This is how we can determine the challenging sectors of each year.
How to determine the good and bad Feng Shui sectors for the Wood Dragon year?
The Chi of every year brings different sectors and directions that are better left undisturbed, while some other can be very beneficial. How are those good and bad sectors determined? By something called the annual afflictions, as well as by the position of the annual Flying Stars and the Qi Men Dun Jia annual oracle.
The annual afflictions are in details:
- The Tai Sui or Grand duke (Jupiter)
- The Sui Po or Year Breaker
- The San Sha or Three Killings
- The Wu Wang or 5 yellow, an annual Flying Star.
To understand the principle, you have to see that Feng Shui and Chinese astrology connect space and time. They constantly interact together. For example, our living spaces are influenced by the time periods used in Feng Shui. The shapes of mountains and the placement of rivers and oceans for a given city also become auspicious or challenging depending of the time period we are in. 2024 is the first year of period 9 and as such herald a new 20 years cycle beginning in Chinese metaphysics.
Besides those periods, each year brings a specific Chi and determine good and bad sectors and direction for the Feng Shui of that year. You can see the article I wrote last year about the Feng Shui of Tiger year 2022.
How are those locations determined? Originally, by studying the orbit of Jupiter that takes 12 years = 12 different positions in the sky on a circular axis. Jupiter is considered a divinity in Chinese cosmology, called the Great Duke or Tai Sui. Where Jupiter “sits” in regard to the Earth axis for a given year is the location of the Chinese zodiac sign of the year and also the location of the energy of this year.
Tai Sui, Sui Po, San Sha, 5 yellow: the annual afflictions of the Wood Dragon year 2024.
Each sign of the year therefore occupies a precise location in space. What matters is the animal of the Chinese zodiac for the year and where it is located. On the Chinese compass, the Dragon sign is located in Southeast 1. What it means is that this Southeast 1 sector is where the energy of this specific year “resides” in 2024. This sector receives the strongest Chi (energy) through 2024 and determine the first affliction of the year.
The Dragon sign and its specific Chi will stay with us for 12 months. Chinese metaphysics use a calendar that accounts for both lunar and solar time. In the lunar calendar, this Chinese New Year starts on the 10th of February 2024. For the solar calculation however, it start on the 4th of February 2024. You can read When does the Dragon year 2024 start? to know more about the logic of those two dates and the Chinese calendar.
Tai Sui: the Grand Duke Jupiter location during the Wood Dragon year 2024
Southeast 1 is therefore the sector and direction under the Tai Sui, or Grand duke Jupiter affliction. It basically means that it should be left undisturbed the whole year, as its energy is too strong. Some Feng Shui practitioners will only account for the specific sector that is Southeast 1. Realistically, most of you don’t know where it starts and finishes inside your home. You can however figure out which rooms occupy the whole Southeast sector from your floor plan. So I always prefer to consider that the whole sector should be left undisturbed…
For Feng Shui, the Tai Sui or Grand Duke Jupiter annual affliction is in the Southeast sector during the Dragon year 2024. The first direction to not disturb in 2024, year of the Wood Dragon, is Southeast.
Sui Po: the year breaker location during the Wood Dragon year 2024
Then we move to the second location. This one occupies the sector that is directly opposite to the energy/location of the year’s sign. If the year’s Dragon sign is in Southeast 1, then the opposite sector to no disturb is Northwest 1! Easy isn’t it?
The Dog sign occupies this location and so it also explains why people born under this sign have to be cautious in 2024. You will eventually read my yearly horoscope for the Dog and all 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac on this site. This opposite of Tai Sui the year’s energy location is known as the Sui Po or “Year breaker”. The Dog occupies Northwest 1 on the Chinese compass: by extension and to be on the safe side, the whole Northwest sector is best left undisturbed.
For Feng Shui, the Sui Po or year breaker annual affliction is in Northwest during the Dragon year. The second sector to not disturb in 2024, year of the Wood Dragon, is Northwest.
San Sha: the 3 Killings location during the Wood Dragon year 2024
We now move to the next affliction known as the 3 Killings, or San Sha in Chinese. Don’t worry about the name: Chinese metaphysics like spectacular names, but it doesn’t means something as bad the “3 killings” would happen to you if you disturb it…Anyway if you’re killed once, what would be the point to kill you two more times? That seems unnecessary sadistic. Even Dexter Morgan doesn’t go that far.
This sector is determined by something a bit more technical, so follow me if you are not familiar with Chinese metaphysics.
In Chinese astrology, Feng Shui but also medicine, we work with the theory of the 5 Elements (or 5 phases: Wu Xing). It is merely a name that states that the Chi takes five different primary energies…Each of the 12 astrological signs that can rule a year belongs to one of those Elements; and to something called an “Elemental frame”. An Elemental frame is basically 3 connected signs, which form the full cycle of one of the Element. There is an Elemental frame for Water, Wood, Fire and Metal; none for the Earth that is “special” (leave her alone, she’s special!). And so, 4 Elemental frames of 3 signs = 12 astrological signs of course…
Last year Rabbit sign belonged to the Wood Frame. This year Dragon sign belongs to the Water Elemental frame, even if it is an Earth sign. The Dragon is the end of the Water Element. Water is born in the Monkey sign, reaches its peak in the Rat and is stored in the Dragon. In term of recent years cycle, it gives us Water born in 2016 (Monkey year), peaking in 2020 (Rat year) and finishing its cycle in 2024, Dragon year.
As those three signs all occupy a “sector” we can then draw the frame between the three sectors to form a triangle. The San Sha is basically the sector and direction directly opposite the peak of this triangle. The peak of this Water frame is the Rat sign located in North 2. Therefore the San Sha, which is the opposite sector, is in South 2. The animal affected in this sector is the Horse. We’re going to consider the whole South as San Sha sector.
In Feng Shui, the San Sha or three killing annual afflictions is in the South during the Dragon year 2024.
Wu Wang: the 5 yellow flying star during the Wood Dragon year 2024
And finally, we have the location of the Flying stars. If you are not familiar with the term, think of the flying stars as some form of “Chinese numerology” that determines good and back sector depending of where the numbers fly and fall each year. The numbers represent a specific Qi at work. While technically all 9 Flying stars have their own influence, we look at the 8 and the 5 first and foremost.
The 5 yellow annual Flying Star, that is considered most negative, flies into the West sector in 2024. This sector should stay especially quiet during the Dragon year, as disturbing this star could bring sickness. If possible, avoid loud music, heat or structural work in the room that is the West sector your home.
In Feng Shui, the 5 Yellow sickness star is in the west in 2024. The last sector to not disturb in 2024, year of the Wood Dragon, is west.
And so we have Southeast (Tai Sui), Northwest (Sui Po), South (San Sha) and west (Wu Wang) as the four sectors really affected during the Dragon year.
How to not disturb the annual afflictions for the Dragon year 2024?
What should we do to respect the annual afflictions? Well, mostly left them undisturbed: it is as simple as that…A challenging sector can affect you if you disturb it. This can be done in several ways:
- If you renovate your home or business in these areas
- if your main door is located on it and constantly used
- if you play loud music or bang a door in these sectors (depends on the day)
- If there is close construction work in your neighbourhood in these directions
Once disturbed, it can bring in extreme case (emphasis on the extreme!) accidents illness, money loss or robbery. It is therefore wise to respect them if you can…If you disturb one of those sector by mistake, best is to leave your place for a couple of hours just after you did, or even better go away for a few days until the effect dissipate. Once activated, it is random luck to know if it going to hit you or not. Focus on good deeds and paying your homage to the divinities you believe in for protection: it can help.
The main aspect is really, if possible, to not renovate in those areas during the Dragon year (4th of February 2024 to 2nd of February 2025). It might not be practical: so if you absolutely need to do renovations, contact me and I can calculate a good day and month to star the work and to avoid triggering problem with your Bazi (Four Pillars = Chinese astrology chart) and then your life.
If a building is in construction or renovated next to your home in Northeast, Southwest or the North direction, it is not ideal either and can trigger some challenges: such as money loss or more rarely accidents. My membership, in which I give you 5 Feng Shui activations each month, will help you get a better luck at home and in your whole life. We can of course also do a Feng Shui consultation.
Finally, avoid making a lot of noise in those sectors: loud music, slamming doors, banging on the walls with a hammer etc. Try to respect those energies, but don’t stop living either…
As for not facing them, in all honesty, it is not such a big deal and at some point you will face them in your home anyway. If you can, make sure your desk or bed is not directly facing the annual afflictions, but don’t obsess about it if you can’t.
What if you sleep or work in those sectors? It is fine if you don’t disturb the sectors. Moreover if the room you sleep in receives the right Chi for you and has the right colours based on your Bazi and Kua, you won’t suffer from the negative influences.
Good Feng Shui: the lucky sectors & directions for 2024, year of the Yang Wood Dragon.
Now, what about the auspicious sectors for the Drago year? Well yes there are some! There is a Yin to every Yang, and vice-versa. Time to see how the other directions and sectors, or “palaces” in Feng Shui, fare in 2024. To determine the auspicious directions and sectors, we are interested in the combination of some of the annual Flying Stars and the Qi Men Dun Jia plate/chart for this year. Don’t be impressed by the name here. The Qi Men Dun Jia is another form of Chinese metaphysics. It used to be a war oracle but can now be used to predict where the good Qi is for a specific place and time. It is therefore useful to combine it with the other predictive oracle that is the Flying Stars. This is the method that I use to determine the 5 lucky Feng Shui activations given in my membership.
The 9 and 8 flying stars during the Dragon year 2024
We are officially moving into period 9 in 2024, even if the effects have been felt for some years already. Star 9 therefore becomes the start of the period and activating it can stimulate wealth: It is located in the South-West this year. The flying star 8 which is also linked to wealth REMAINS beneficial in period 9. It flies in the North sector this year. These two sectors can therefore be activated this year. The activations that I give monthly will for some be in the North and further activate at the right time the good luck generated by this sector.
Here is chart the Flying Stars for the Wood Dragon year 2024. In blue, the good stars; in orange, the challenging ones. Remember that in the Bagua or Pakua, South is on top and North at the bottom.
Qi Men Dun Jia for 2024, year of the Yang Wood Dragon.
For the Qimen oracle, it’s not great I must say. This Yang Wood year is a Fu Yin = trap structure. Basically the energy repeat itself in all sectors, which creates at best stagnation and at worst danger. There is only a double Yin Fire structure which is auspicious enough. However it lands in a pure Metal Metal sector of NW, where it’s not great to see Fire for a whole year. In other words there is very little usable directions and sectors in the Qi Men Dun Jia yearly plate. North is the absolute worst I must say, due to the double Yang Metal (Geng Geng) structure, barely appeased by a good door. This minimise the good aspects of the 8 flying stars, and this why it’s important to know both oracles. If all those terms are confusing to you, just remember that for the Qi Men travelling oracle, only NW is usable in the year structure.
The Qi Men year plate is one thing, but then there are great month and day plates with excellent directions and sectors to active each month. Those activations bring more luck in life and boost work, finance and relationships. Then we’ll be able to use North and the wealth star, as well as other sectors, at the right auspicious time. If you are part of my membership, the Qi Men analysis is the method that I use to determine your 5 lucky feng shui boosts of each month to generate the best luck in your life. If you are not yet part of this lucky club, you can join in here right now.
All the good and bad directions and sectors for the Wood Dragon year 2024.
When combining all aspects: annual Feng Shui afflictions, the flying stars and the Qi Men Dun Jia for the year of the Dragon, we end up with this ranking from best to worse.
This best sectors for the year, not affected by annual afflictions :
- Southwest
- Northeast
- East
- Centre
Those directions/sectors are all afflicted
- Southeast
- South
- West
- Northwest
Southwest is the winner this year having no afflictions and receiving the 9 flying star, but its Qi Men structure is not ideal. North is a special case, both auspicious in annual Flying stars and very inauspicious in annual QiMen, but without yearly afflictions. Both sectors can be activated but only at the right time. This is the point of my Feng Shui membership.
Below is a visual representation of all the sectors for this year.
- In blue: average.
- In green: both auspicious and inauspicious, know when to activate
- In red: sensitive, do not disturb
Buying properties with the right Feng Shui during the Wood Dragon year 2024
Traditionally, it is best to avoid buying a property with the main door located on one of the annual affliction for that year. For example, in 2024 you’d avoid buying a house with its door in Southeast where the Tai Sui is; it also applies to Southwest (Sui Po) and South (San Sha). The 5 yellow is less of a concern here. We need to explore this rule a bit further.
- If you don’t move in in this house during that year, that’s not a problem.
- If however you renovate it, you still need to respect the annual afflictions guidelines.
- If you move in during that year, the solution is to then select a good move-in date for you and the other people concerned.
This is done by studying your Bazi and the monthly energies, and line up your Heaven (astrology/timing), Human (your move in date) and Earth (your new place) luck. There is always a way…I can of course assist you entirely into choosing the right place and find the best moving in date.
